S IS FOR SOUTH YEMEN, Y IS FOR YUGOSLAVIA, U IS FOR UNITED STATES

Alia Ali’s parents were migrants from countries that no longer exist: Yugoslavia and South Yemen. Yugoslavia was splintered into smaller states, while the fight for South Yemen’s renewed independency still persists. Alia grew up between countries, and keeps traveling extensively in her practice. The result is a mesmerizing study of the way identities overlap: using textiles that come from various world artisans Alia creates and photographs sculptures that are as beautiful and intricate as the identity of any third (fourth, fifth) culture kid.
