A series of photographs on freedom and African identity that won the Dak’art Biennale Grand Prix

B IS FOR BENIN and F IS FOR FRANCE

Malaïka Dotou Sankofa is an androgynous angel with a composite name from different African languages and wings made from various African fabrics. This photography series on the theme of African identity and liberation by the Beninese/French duo Laeïla Adjovi and Loïc Hoquet won the grand prix of the Dak’art Biennale in 2018. And rightly so: its incredible simplicity hides folds and layers of complexity of black African humanity that had been for so long overlooked. It’s quite incredible how this pair of young artists managed such a concise, yet rich portrait of a transient continent and a fanonian introduction to the future ahead.
