F IS FOR FRANCE, M IS FOR MADAGASCAR and R IS FOR REUNION

This is quite possibly the most enlightening read I’ve had all year: a remarkable personal essay on the historical events that transpired on the island of Tromelin in the 18th century. At the basis of the narrative is the author’s journey to unearth the long-buried truth about a group of to-be-slaves shipwrecked on a desert island, but as he digs for artifacts along with the archeologists and tries to imagine what it was like to spend 15 years on the island, he uncovers some bitter truths about our “civilization”. Outstanding art and intelligent storytelling combine to make an absolutely necessary read. And definitely some potential cinema material.
