P IS FOR PAKISTAN
Kami Sid is both Pakistan’s first transgender model and the country’s first transgender TV presenter. In addition to that, she is also a resilient fighter for trans rights. Pakistan has a curious history in regards to gender: Khawaja Sira, people who are neither male, nor female, have been long accepted as a “third gender” in the country. Khawaja Sira are now criticizing Kami for dismissing their heritage and trivializing the gender issues in Pakistan by using a westernized approach. It reminds me of the trans & non-binary schism that exists in the Western culture, and makes me think that the future is in inclusivity for everyone, whether they want to adhere to the gender binary or the traditional cultural heritage or not.
