Jon Wang, From Its Mouth Came A River Of High-End Residential Appliances, review

C IS FOR CHINA, H IS FOR HONG KONG and U IS FOR UNITED STATES

Did you know that high rise buildings in Hong Kong have multi-story holes in them so that according to feng shui dragons could pass through? Visual artist Jon Wang decided to hire a man with a drone to film flight through them. The result is a 13 minute unraveling of culture, identity and sexuality that directs attention to the unseen holes that are inherent to the Western realization of self, and dissects the civilization binary in which the Asian-American artist exists, among with others like myself. 13 minutes is not much to fall in love, but after this I am a fan of Jon Wang’s for life now.
