T IS FOR THAILAND

The news are abuzz with the Thai boys who got lost in the cave, and the story makes me think immediately of Joe’s films (fans call Apichatpong Weerasethakul Joe). Rooted in life but so mysteriously magical, his films have caves, and darkness, and naked boys. Maybe he will make a documentary?

This film of Joe’s is about love. It shows how love works. First you cuddle and give each other mixtapes, then you’re giving your flesh and spirit to a monster tiger in the woods at night. And the nightmare is even more beautiful than the romance, as far as you’re concerned.

Dedicated to the person who doesn’t mind going to the forest with me when I’m in darkness.

Tropical Malady (Sud Pralad), 2004
Director: Apichatpong Weerasethakul
