Music: Africando, Volume 1: Trovador, 1993

S IS FOR SENEGAL and U IS FOR UNITED STATES

This is one of these perfect ABCInsane albums: a collaboration between salsa musicians from NYC and Senegalese vocalists, which started out in the 1990s, and remains strong until this day, with a widened geography of invited musicians (now it’s named Africando All Stars). This is the first album, and the original unadulterated Africando concept, which brings together the two fiery, spicy music styles together and creates music that is hard to resist. Whenever I listen to it I feel like I’m on an old-fashioned street danceflor, tapping my heels against the old, whitewashed wood planks. Also I immediately start craving ceviche, because one song is about pescadores and with my limited Spanish I have to be imaginative.
