Y IS FOR YEMEN, I IS FOR ISRAEL, U IS FOR URUGUAY, U IS FOR UNITED STATES, E IS FOR EGYPT and P IS FOR POLAND

I am obsessed with this band and can’t wait until they return to New York because their live shows are said to be something extraordinary. They currently have a new album out, but while I’m waiting for it to arrive, I’m listening to this live one, and their first 2011 recording. And damn, I can only imagine what the frontman, Ravid Kahalani, can do on stage, if his shamanistic chants on audio make me fall into a meditative, dervish-like dance.

Yemen Blues, a truly international endeavor brings together people from various backgrounds, and blends Yemenite, West African, and American musical influences to create music that Kahalani calls “New Age Culture Music”. Percussions galore, oud and bass, and Kahalani’s incomparable vocals, make the music unreal. It pays respects but defies traditions, and creates magic. Exactly what I love.
