Jia Zhangke, A Touch of Sin, review⠀

C IS FOR CHINA

The film that should be shown whenever someone starts talking about the miracles of Chinese economy: the necessary portraits of citizens trying to survive capitalism. The four novellas intermingle to show all aspects of life in the provinces, and create a sweeping survey of othering that was not possible in earlier ideological governments. Especially significant are the dignified endings for each of the characters: all different, all sad, but also undoubtedly heroic.
