M IS FOR MEXICO

Palma Rodriguez is a Mexican artist who makes elaborate robotic sculptures to show the way nature and humans relate to each other in his homeland in the age of land grabs, violence, environmental crises and migration. His works are messy-looking, with soil and rubbish often a part of the composition, but their precise, carefully programmed choreography makes them push through the debris and reveal painful truths about our modernity.

Resembling archeological finds by a civilization that will inherit the earth long after we’re all gone, his mechanical creations are embodiments of our swan songs, and the swan song of our planet. This is what it will look like after we’ve successfully managed to kill each other and scorch the earth.
